Katie’s New Birth

  • June 2, 2011 4:46 pm

So, once again it has been a long time since I have posted to this blog. Life has been exciting to say the least!

Katie, whom we took guardianship over in the Spring of last year (2010), is now becoming our legal daughter. For years she has asked us to adopt her, however we have always told her that she has a family and does not need to be adopted by us. Yet to Katie, being adopted gives her a sense of belonging and permanence that she has not felt in her life. So, although adoption is not necessary to make her any more a part of our family from our stand point – it does make a difference to her. So, after careful consideration and long discussions with Katie, her birth mother and alleged birth father, we have decided that it is actually in Katie’s best interest to adopt her and that we become her legal mother and father.

It is a great joy for us and the same time a feeling of dread – not that we dread anything about Katie – only that we do not want the adoption to put undue strain on her. Because as much as Katie says she wants this, and as good and beneficial as it actually is for her – she is 14, and as most of us know at that age everything always looks better when you wear rose colored glasses.

Cora loves the idea that Katie is going to be her “real” sister – it’s like both of them were afraid that because we were not Katie’s “real” parents that she would have to leave at some point. Now, with the adoption pending they are both excited and although Katie is the older of the two, Cora thinks she has to take care of her – which is a sore spot for Katie, who thinks she has to mother Cora. It’s really funny to watch at times, then at other times it is not so funny – especially when the arguing ensues.

I have to say – I thank God for answering the prayer prayed so many years ago when I wanted to have children. I never realized that He would answer it in this way!
